Central
Lutheran Church. New Life Communications
had the opportunity to work with local consulting firm,
Kehl Associates,
a design firm specializing in architectural acoustics, sound,
and audi-visual systems design. As every sound system project
does, Central Lutheran Church had some unique requirements.
One example of this unique space is that the design had
to compensate for the high reverberation time. In such a
room using a typical loudspeaker system puts too much reverberant
energy in the room which degrades speech intelligibility
making the sound very difficult to understand. Kehl
Associates' design used a combination of a specially engineered
central loudspeaker cluster together with a unique adaptation
of a distributed system known as a pew-back or pew-bottom
speaker system. The central loudspeaker cluster utilized
very-high directivity loudspeakers which, if properly used,
improve speech intelligibility. In addition, small
loudspeakers were installed at the bottoms of each pew,
bringing the sound closer to the congregation and, thereby,
further improving speech intelligibility. The pew-bottom
loudspeakers were delayed digitally to provide the sense
of the sound emanating from the front of the church rather
than from the bottoms of the pews. In addition, three
music clusters provided high performance stereo music reinforcement. A
digital microphone mixer installed in a custom console completed
the system. New Life Communications joined in the
final stages of design in conjunction with the consultant.
The final adjustments, which are highly refined on
a systems such as this were also performed by New Life Communications
in cooperation with the consultant. A creative solution
to a unique need.
